Runners Soar at the 8th Annual Liz Padilla 5K

Sunday, October 6th 2013, the Brooklyn Volunteer Lawyers Project hosted the 8th Annual Liz Padilla Memorial 5K run in Prospect Park, to honor the legacy of a remarkable colleague.  With 15 teams in attendance and a total of 300 runners, this was the most well attended event in the race’s history.  The VLP raised over $35,000, essential fundraising for our ongoing pro bono legal service programs.

Topics include: Introduction to CLARO; Ethical Considerations; Client Interaction; Pre-Litigation & The Life of a Debt;
The Court Process & Key Motions; Substantive Defenses; Negotiating a Settlement; Stipulations; Preparing the Pro Se
Consumer Debt Defendant for Trial

Your Commitment
This course is FREE to those who volunteer for six total hours with CLARO by October 31, 2013. The commitment may
be different for the Civil Court programs.

Volunteers may serve one of the following consumer debt pro se assistance programs, all of which provide limited legal
advice to unrepresented consumers: Bronx CLARO; Brooklyn CLARO; Manhattan CLARO (must be a NYCLA member or
Fordham Law School alumnus/a); Queens CLARO; Staten Island CLARO; Westchester CLARO; The Civil Court
Consumer Debt Lawyer for the Day Program; The Civil Court Help Center Consumer Debt Advice Program.

Presented by: SARAH NOLAN, Staff Attorney, Brooklyn Defender Services MEREDITH FORTIN, Lutheran Social Services of New York

Program Overview: Under President Obama’s new immigration policy, thousands of young immigrants under age 31 who arrived in the U.S. as children can now apply for “deferred action”, which provides protection from deportation and permission to work legally. This will be life-changing for these young New Yorkers. The need for volunteer attorneys to help register them is already overwhelming and will continue to grow in the coming months.

Training topics will include: Eligibility requirements, risks and benefits of applying for DACA, completing application forms and submitting supporting documents, fees and fee exemptions, clinic intake and exit procedures.

Your Commitment: This course is offered FREE in exchange for your commitment to volunteer for a minimum of two three-hour clinic sessions sponsored by the presenting organizations. Clinics will be held in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Astoria, Queens. Experienced attorneys receive additional MCLE credit for every 6 hours of eligible pro bono service.
