Since its founding in 1990, the Brooklyn Volunteer Lawyers Project has maintained as its objective the practical realization of justice for the poor. Through the pro bono commitment of the private bar, the VLP solves civil legal problems affecting people’s fundamental rights. Through the VLP, pro bono attorneys from the private bar have provided critical legal assistance to thousands of individuals and families from Brooklyn’s poorest neighborhoods.  The goal of each VLP volunteer attorney is to use the legal system to help people regain dignity and control over their lives. An independent 501(c)(3) non-profit, the VLP was originally founded under the auspices of the Brooklyn Bar Association through a demonstration grant from the New York State IOLA Fund and the New York Bar Foundation.  It continues to receive support from IOLA, NYBF, the city and state, as well as from private foundations and individual donors.
